Aerobic septic alarm going off: what to do
An alarm on an aerobic system means something needs attention, often the air compressor or a high water level. It is not something to ignore or rewire.
Safe first steps
- Silence the buzzer if the panel has a switch, but leave the light on.
- Cut water use: hold off on laundry, dishwashers and long showers until the system is checked.
- Check the breaker for the aerobic unit. If it tripped again, stop and call a pro.
- Listen near the unit: OSU advises homeowners to make sure the air compressor is running (OSU Extension PSS-2914).
- Call a certified service provider. Edmond advises contacting a specialist immediately when the alarm activates (City of Edmond aerobic maintenance page).
Don't do it yourself
OSU recommends that homeowners do not try to repair aerobic units themselves; open tanks and electrical parts are hazards (OSU Extension PSS-2914).
Other signs to watch
- A rotten-egg odor (OSU Extension PSS-2914)
- No chlorine in the feeder; Edmond asks owners to check chlorine monthly (City of Edmond aerobic maintenance page)
- Spray heads that are clogged, broken or spraying at the wrong time (OSU Extension PSS-2914)
Why the alarm exists
Oklahoma requires the pump tank of an aerobic system to have a high-water alarm that warns the owner when the tank is more than half full (OSU Extension aerobic fact sheet).
Simple checks between visits
OSU suggests listening for the compressor, checking chlorine often, noticing any rotten-egg odor, and looking at the spray heads (OSU Extension aerobic fact sheet). Edmond adds keeping inspection records and watching sludge build-up as part of normal care (City of Edmond aerobic maintenance page).
Who pays
During the first two years, OSU says the installer must repair, adjust or replace broken parts at no cost to the owner, and record sludge levels on a set schedule (OSU Extension aerobic fact sheet). Edmond says that agreement must include at least 4 visits (City of Edmond).
Oklahoma installers must maintain a new aerobic system for the first two years; after that the owner is responsible (OSU Extension PSS-2275 (aerobic systems)). Check your paperwork before paying for a repair.
